Rambler

The Rambler was one of four vessels to leave Tobermory (and another from Oban) in 1806 with emigrants from Mull and Colonsay bound for Prince Edward Island. In total, there were around 500 passengers, 130 of whom were on the Humphreys.

This being soon after the Passenger Act of 1803, enacted at the behest of proprietors wanting to discourage emigration (they needed the labour for the kelp trade), the condition of these vessels was good and the accommodation relatively spacious. It also meant that the cost of passage would be higher than was previously the case. The new requirements for documentation also means that there are passenger lists for most of the voyages around this time.

Many of these emigrants settled in Lots 62 and 65 (Belfast/Belle Creek and Canoe Cove/New Argyll).
