The daughter of the Earl of Carlisle, she was Mistress of the Robes to, and a friend of, Queen Victoria. She married George Granville Leveson-Gower in 1823 and so became the 2nd duchess when he succeeded to the title in 1833. One of the organisers of the anti-slavery petition presented to Harriet Beecher Stowe, her influence on Mrs Stowe and the latter's subsequent denial of the Clearances, brought condemnation from, among others, Donald MacLeod and Thomas Mulock.
